History
The Geasa-Marana Branch Library opened on March 2, 1977 to serve the newly-incorporated community of Marana, Arizona. Originally a 1,000-square-foot room in the Pima County Government Complex with 3,000 books, the library was enlarged and remodeled in 1995 to 2,900 square feet, including a 420-square-foot meeting room and five public, Internet-accessible computers.
Today, the collection has grown to 11,000 items, including books, magazines, audio books, videos, CD's, DVD's, and other materials. Yearly circulation is approximately 30,000 items.
In February 2005, the Geasa-Marana Branch was renamed the Marlyn Mae Geasa-Marana Branch Library to honor Marana resident Marlyn Mae Geasa, who was a dedicated employee at the Marana Branch Library for more than 20 years.
Geasa was Circulation Manager and Library Associate at the branch from 1980 until her death in 2003. She and her family moved to Marana from the Washington, D.C. area in the 1970s.
To generations of children, she presented countless Storytimes and library programs. To countless adults over the decades she recommended good books to read and provided community information. Her extracurricular community involvement included teaching popular introductory aerobics classes, free of charge, for many years at the Marana Community Center.
After her death in December 2003, grateful library patrons honored her years of dedicated service by petitioning to rename the building in her honor, which the Pima County Board of Supervisors enacted two years later.
