In the early morning hours before dawn Monday, the only light on Baffert Drive emanated from a small corner bakery, where Carlos Castañeda had been working all night.
Inside, trays were stacked high with sweets fresh out of the oven. The yeasty scent of uncooked bread surrounded Castañeda as he kneaded, flattened, folded and cut the dough, transforming it into donuts, pastries and rolls, just like his father taught him when he was a little boy.
